bio
Even though I've gone through the whole educational system, up to a Ph.D. degree in software engineering, I have learned more from hacking on free and open source projects than course books. I guess I'm a hacker at heart. All my professional life I've only worked on digital freedoms issues: free software, free culture, free knowledge, and free communications. So I'm a living proof that freedom doesn't have to make it hard to put bread on your table.

Projects
The OpenSpending community project aims to build and use open source tools and datasets to gather and analyse the financial transactions of governments around the world.
Only by understanding the financial transactions that are made in their name can citizens hope to hold government to account, and begin to effect positive change they wish to see in the world.
I am currently the technical lead of OpenSpending and a paid member of staff of the Open Knowledge Foundation, the facilitator of the project that runs the main instance at https://openspending.org/
