Barebones CMS

  • Q: I'd like to participate. How do I begin?

    • 0

First, start using Barebones CMS to get comfortable with how it works. Document the initial effort as best as possible because "first impressions" are the easiest way to participate. First time users provide valuable feedback on the product. Once you really know a product, it is very hard to see it from a newbie's eyes.

If you want to really get involved, then go on the forums and ask or e-mail CubicleSoft directly about your interest. There's always something to be done that's interesting (i.e. new features). Nobody likes bug hunting, so CubicleSoft ends up doing the bulk of that work, which is not really a big deal because it is still enjoyable work. You won't be burdened with bug hunting unless you really want to do that sort of thing.

      • Tip:

Talk about diverse kinds of contributions. Include URLs if relevant (we'll automatically linkify them).

      • Examples:

Here's how to download and patch our codes…

Read about our death-defying mailing list and momentous IRC channel at http://lobstermag.net.

  • Q: Other than writing code, how can I contribute?

      Evangelism, Publicity

The major problem with this project and motivation to work on it is the lack of users. I'm terrible at the evangelism side of the product. Marketing is NOT my strong suit.

Barebones CMS is a really awesome little product. The vast majority of websites out there are little 5-6 page deals, which is the perfect environment for Barebones. Those websites are either statically coded or the developer dumped one of the major CMS products on the server. Neither situation is ideal for letting the website owner edit their own content. Barebones offers a non-database driven CMS to users.

So that's the basic gist. Getting that message out to people is quite difficult.

      Translations

Barebones CMS is currently only available in one language: American English.

I mean, there's nothing horribly wrong with the language, translating the admin interface into another language would be fantastic.

There are also probably some insights into improvements in the multilingual support portions of Barebones CMS.

      • Tip:

Discuss documentation, testing, webmastering, and/or publicity.

Include URLs if relevant (we'll automatically linkify them).

      • Example:

We need people to download version 0.4.5 and make sure the frobulator still frobulates correctly.

      Track down Content Editor issues

If you REALLY want to hunt for bugs, the Content Editor occasionally goes haywire. I've not been able to track down the cause because it seems to be random, which probably means some piece of code is executing out of order.

The Content Editor is based on WYMEditor, instead of TinyMCE (which most CMS products use). I've found TinyMCE lacks elegance, but WYMEditor feels a bit beta-ish at times like the occasional bug.

      • Tip:

Many projects have good small tasks that can teach newcomers how the project works. Now's your chance to share one of them!

Include URLs if relevant (we'll automatically linkify them).

      • Example:

Someone could improve the photo upload dialog box so that it lets you resize the photo before sending it to the web.

  • Q: What is a bug or issue with Barebones CMS that you've been putting off, neglecting, or just plain avoiding?

    • [X]
      • Examples:

I don't know how to get started with internationalizing my app.

Bug 392 about printing was filed five years ago, and I don't even know if printing still works.

I want help from a C coder writing a Maildir patch for Alpine.

      • Note:

If this issue was formally filed on the web, be sure to include the URL.

What else do you want to talk about?
