Joining #minetest-mods and helping modders with graphic design is a very helpful thing, because it enables them to focus on coding. You could also work on skins in the downtime, giving players multiple choices for game style!

A lot of the current documentation and literature in the project is somewhat less than friendly, often littered with swear words and insults, because it was written largely for internal use among the core developers. Join #minetest-delta and ask how to help with this task.
