When you download the source code, read the docs/tech-notes.txt file. It explains the principles behind Alpine's design, both in the code and in the user interface.

First things first, join the re-alpine-devel list: Go to https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/re-alpine-devel and enter your email address.
Introduce yourself and ask on the list how you can help.
Also, check out the source code via git: http://sourceforge.net/scm/?type=git&group_id=264924

1Easy crash bug that can be fixed
Mark Crispin (formerly very involved in the UW team that maintained alpine) emailed the alpine-info list with a bug that should be easy enough to fix. I can mentor someone interested in working on a patch.
http://mailman2.u.washington.edu/pipermail/alpine-info/2010-March/003090.html is the link!

Q: What is a bug or issue with alpine that you've been putting off, neglecting, or just plain avoiding?

0Alpine needs Maildir support
There's a non-free-software Maildir patch written by Eduardo Chappa. For the Debian package, we can't distribute it. Maildir is a popular way to store emails on disk. It's stressful because the Debian bug has been open for *so* long....
So we need someone else (preferably someone who has not seen the Chappa Maildir patch) to write a "driver" for Alpine to support reading mails stored in that format.
Skills needed: C programming -- the code would be mostly string manipulation and a little bit of UNIX file reading. I can mentor with regard to the Alpine internals, and I have a specification written for how the old Maildir patch works.
An old Debian bug lives at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=405762 .
